Trojan girls? track gets out of the 2010 blocks in Iowa City
IOWA CITY ? The Fairfield girls? track and field team took its first step onto the track in 2010 at Tuesday?s Demon Indoor at the University of Iowa Recreation Building in Iowa City.
With almost half of the roster filled with freshmen running against varsity competition for the first time, the preseason meet that featured 21 schools ranging from Class 1A to 4A may have opened the eyes of some of the young Trojans

IOWA CITY ? The Fairfield girls? track and field team took its first step onto the track in 2010 at Tuesday?s Demon Indoor at the University of Iowa Recreation Building in Iowa City.
With almost half of the roster filled with freshmen running against varsity competition for the first time, the preseason meet that featured 21 schools ranging from Class 1A to 4A may have opened the eyes of some of the young Trojans according to head coach Ron Hunerdosse.
However, freshman Sydney Howard stepped in big time for Fairfield placing 10th in the 60-meter dash. by winning her finals heat in a time of 8.20. Edna Jones also qualified for the final in the event placing 16th with a time of 8.32.
Other Fairfield highlights included the senior tandem of Libbey Schubert and Katie Hammes reclaiming their spots as team leaders. After qualifying for the state meet in the 200-meter dash last spring, Schubert came in with a second-place finish with a time of 27.99 on the short track. Hammes, also a 2009 state qualifier, placed sixth in the shot put with a heave of 37-feet, 7.25-inches.
The Trojans have more than a week off before running their next indoor meet scheduled for March 18 at the Central Indoor in Pella. The Trojans? first outdoor meet is the Mount Pleasant Relays slated for April 1.
