MONROE - The Fairfield basketball teams were minutes away from a road sweep of Prairie City Monroe on Tuesday night. The Trojan girls pulled away for a 57-41 win, but the boys fell to a comeback bid that ended on a game-winning three-pointer by PCM's Jason Stafford, which handed the Trojan boys a 59-56 loss.
The Fairfield girls won every quarter. The Trojans led 7-4 after the first quarter and 27-21 at the halftime break.
Much like in the first half, the two offenses took a while to get rolling in the second half. Fairfield took the third quarter 9-6 to stretch their lead to 36-27 before running away from the game in the final minutes.
Shaylin Drish led the Trojan girls with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Destiny Gridley was second on the team with 18 points.
Hannah Simpson scored seven points in the win. Darby Kaska and Danielle Breen scored three points apiece. Rachel Thomas had two points and Mallory Lyon finished with one. Delaney Breen didn't score, but finished the night with four assists and four steals.
The Trojan boys had to storm back from a halftime deficit. Fairfield trailed 17-9 after the first quarter and 32-26 at the break.
The Trojans came out of halftime on a mission. They scored a game-high 20 points in the third quarter and took 46-40 lead into the final period. PCM bounced right back in the fourth quarter to tie the game, and then win it on Stafford's shot, which went through with one second left in the game.
A couple of freshman led the Trojans in scoring. Max Weaton had 14 points on 5-5 shooting and 2-2 from three-point land. Tate Allen finished the night with 12.
Landon Kooiker had eight points and four assists. Blake Holden had eight points of his own. Drew Martin finished with four points and seven rebounds. Carter Ferrel had four points and four assists, and both Elan Ledger and Cameron Ledger finished with three.
The Fairfield girls are now 5-4 overall, and remain 3-1 in conference play. The Trojan boys are 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the Southeast Conference.
Fairfield will host Mt. Pleasant in an SEC doubleheader tonight (Thursday). The girls will play first, at 6:15 p.m.
