CENTERVILLE — The Fairfield girls basketball team is on the winner’s board for the first time this season.
The Trojan girls and boys traveled to Centerville in a non-conference doubleheader, which served to give the Lady Trojans their first victory in nine tries, winning 66-53. The Trojan boys fell 46-37.
Senior Savannah Hollander caught fire early, scoring 19 points by halftime, including 10 in the first quarter to give the Trojans an early advantage. Fairfield led the game 24-11 after one quarter at halftime.
Centerville did rally in the fourth quarter, turning what was a 55-39 Trojan lead into a two-possession game, but the Trojans pulled away late to earn their first victory.
The 66 points for Fairfield was the most the team had put up all season. The Trojan girls had not scored more than 40 points in a game until Thursday night’s victory.
The Fairfield trailed 13-9 after one quarter and 19-16 at halftime before Centerville bursted out of the locker rooms with a huge run that had the Trojans down by as much as 18.
Fairfield trailed 35-23 at the half but a big Trojan run had the game within five points in the fourth quarter. Fairfield, however, went cold over the last couple of minutes, and Centerville got out with a nine-point win.
The Fairfield girls head into the new year with a 1-8 record. The Trojan boys are 1-7. Both teams are still looking for their first Southeast Conference victories.
