FORT MADISON ? The Fairfield golf team got its first look at Southeast Conference heavyweight Washington Tuesday evening, and the Demons proved to be just that.
Fairfield?s final tally fell three strokes behind Washington, 160-163, as the two squads easily disposed of Fort Madison (185) and Davis County (188) on Fort Madison?s Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course.
But Tuesday certainly wasn?t the last shot Fairfield has at the Demons. And hopefully with No. 2 golfer Jordan Leazer back from illness, the two will square off once again on the Demons? home course next week, which will provide even more build-up to the postseason matchups that also loom including the sectional tournament set for May 14 back on the same course in Fort Madison.
Fairfield?s final team tally of 163 from the front nine at Sheaffer was six strokes better than they shot just one day earlier on the back nine. Cody Kool certainly did his part to mark that improvement shaving off a whopping 12 strokes from Monday?s total to earn meet medalist honors with a very consistent one-over par round of 37. Kool, a sophomore, suffered just two bogeys on the day and got one back with a birdie on the par-4 No. 7.
Derek Byrnes hovered around his season average taking 40 strokes, and Colton Fry continued to display the clear improvement from this time last year that has made him a consistent scorer for the Trojans. Fry?s 42 and Davis Lowenberg?s 44 filled out the Fairfield team score.
Freshman Jon Anderson, golfing his first-ever varsity meet, fired a 49 and CJ Shipman shot a 51 to serve as alternates for Fairfield.
Washington?s Alex Thode was the runner-up medalist with a 38, Joe Harris took a 39, Brock Kimble shot a 40 and Kaleb Rich ended up with a 43 to complete the Demon team score.
The Trojans ? now 13-2 on the year ? will play their third meet in four days as they head to Mount Pleasant Thursday.
