FAIRFIELD — For the first time in the 2025-26 basketball season, the Fairfield boys and girls were both girls and boys were both playing on the same night, as Oskaloosa came into town for a non-conference doubleheader.
It was a rough night shooting the ball for both Trojan teams, as neither could upend the visiting Indians. The Fairfield girls fell 42-28, and the boys faltered 76-55.
The Trojan girls dug a deep hole early, as Oskaloosa’s quickness led to a flurry of early fast break points and a 17-6 first quarter lead.
The Trojans would battle back to cut the advantage to 23-13 at halftime. Oskaloosa led 36-22 after three, and Fairfield could never get back within striking distance.
“We missed some bunnies. We missed some open shots,” said Fairfield head coach Brian Witzenberg. “We did a lot of good things, and a lot of things we did that we can really look at and build off.”
Elyse Setterstrom led Fairfield with 12 points in the loss. Emma Metcalf had seven. Faith Jones finished with six. Lauren Martin had two, and Maddy Martin scored one.
The Trojan boys couldn’t find any momentum in the first half. Oskaloosa raced out to a 16-7 advantage, and led 37-17 at halftime.
Fairfield nearly outscored Oskaloosa in the second half, but the Trojans never got it back within single digits after the halftime buzzer rung.
After the game, Trojan boys coach Nate Perkins talked about the difficulty scoring on the team’s first night out in regular season action.
“We had those guys last year that, if we needed them to go score, they could go score and keep us in the game for a while,” said Perkins. “Right now, we don’t have that guy, and we need to figure out who that’s going to be.”
The Trojans had all sorts of trouble with junior Tommy North, Oskaloosa’s leading returning scorer, who put up 28 points and collected five steals. In all, the Trojans turned the ball over 26 times.
Despite the loss, Drew Myers had a nice night shooting the basketball. He went 4-for-9 from 3-point range and ended the night with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Brock Atwood was a perfect 5-for-5, and finished with 12 points on the game.l Ethan Bisgard and Rowan Kness scored 10 points apiece. Eli Zillman had four points and eight rebounds. Xavier Kessel scored three points, and Nolan Smith finished with two.
The Fairfield girls are now 1-2, while the boys are 0-1. Both teams will be in Ft. Madison on Friday night.
