FAIRFIELD — Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant faced off Thursday night in a Southeast Conference softball showdown, and it was all Trojans as Fairfield powered to a dominant 10-1 win over the Panthers.
The Trojans (10-8) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and maintaining control the rest of the way.
Mt. Pleasant (4-16) managed its only run in the top of the second, when Chaley Cook drove in Jolynn Martin.
That run would be the Panthers’ only bright spot, as they were held hitless for the remainder of the game. Fairfield, on the other hand, racked up 10 hits and continued to pile on the runs, adding two more in the second inning before erupting for six in the third to break the game wide open.
Maddy Martin, Leah Helmick, and Olivia Hollander each drove in two runs for the Trojans, while Lilly Bergren and Faith Jones added one RBI apiece.
Hollander, Helmick, and Laney Norris led the way with two hits each, and Bergren, Martin, Vanessa Kessel, and Haylee Eklund all contributed one hit.
In the circle, Helmick delivered a strong performance, going five innings without allowing a hit. She struck out five and surrendered just one unearned run.
Chaley Cook started for Mt. Pleasant, pitching four innings and allowing 11 hits and 10 runs, six of them earned.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 6-3 in conference play, while Mt. Pleasant drops to 2-7.
