The Fairfield seventh-grade girls? ?A? team won their seventh straight game to open the season Tuesday, topping Keokuk by the final score of 34-13.
The Trojans took an 8-2 lead after one quarter and 12-5 advantage by halftime. They came out firing in the second half to score another 22 points.
?Our girls came out slow the first half offensively, but our defense picked up the slack,? said Fairfield head coach Derek Philips. ?It was a great win tonight for our girls. It was one we knew would be challenging, but our girls really wanted this win.?
Kenady Waugh led all scorers with 17 points and Kylie Kurtz chipped in seven. Samantha Fritz, Brooke McLain, Brynna Bowman, Haley Beard and Mikaela Lunsford added two points apiece.
The Fairfield ?B? team also won, 20-5. The Trojans never trailed in the contest and only allowed two free throws in the second half.
?It was close for the first quarter of the game, but then our offense just took off,? Philips said. ?Our defense was also much stronger tonight than it has been. I was really pleased with how well we executed tonight.?
Natalie Angstead scored eight points to lead the Trojan ?B? team. Sarah Trent and Sarah Swanson added four points each, and Mady Rauscher and Kylee Marlay scored two apiece.
The seventh-graders continue their homestand today with a game vs. Burlington?s Aldo Leopold.
