BURLINGTON — Fairfield softball gave No. 9 (Class 4A) Burlington everything they had on Monday night, but the Trojans couldn’t pull out a victory in the Southeast Conference doubleheader.
The Trojans were defeated 8-3 in game one and 2-1 in the second.
In the first, both squads put up their best scoring inning of the night.
The Trojans kicked off the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, but they would never lead again in the game.
Burlington answered back with five runs in its half of the first frame and never lost the advantage.
After the Trojans were held scoreless in the top half of the second, the Grayhounds added three more to their total to make it 8-2.
The Trojans were able to put one more on the board in the third, but that was the final run scored in the game.
Through the rest of the game, Fairfield tallied just one more hit.
Game two was even more competitive between the two teams.
It took four and a half innings before the first run of the game was scored.
Burlington brought one home in the bottom of the fourth, but Fairfield was able to stay right in it after knotting the game at 1-1 with a run in the fifth frame.
The game winning run came half an inning later though as the Grayhounds matched the Trojans with one in the bottom of the fifth.
With the loss, Fairfield stays at third in the SEC with a conference record of 3-2.
Overall, the Trojans sit at 4-5.
