Trojan softball picks up 2nd win
Fairfield defeats Iowa City West after dropping pair of games

IOWA CITY — The Fairfield softball team went 1-2 this weekend, playing one game at home and two at the Iowa City West Softball Classic.
After falling in a wild 10-8 loss against Fort Madison on Thursday night, the Trojans played two games in the Classic on Saturday. Cedar Rapids Prairie knocked off Fairfield 12-0 before the Trojans took down hosting Iowa City West, 6-3.
The Trojans led early and tied the game late at different times against Fort Madison. Fairfield held a 3-2 advantage after the first inning. Then later on, down 8-3 in the fifth, Fairfield scored five in the bottom half to tie it at 8-8.
Fort Madison scored one run each in the sixth and seventh. The Trojans couldn’t pull off the win.
Laney Norris went 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. She drew four walks on the day. Faith Jones was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as well. Olivia Hollander, Vanessa Kessel and Emmelia Miller each knocked in one run.
Kessel’s one hit against Cedar Rapids Prairie, but that’s all the Trojans would get.
Fairfield trailed Iowa City West 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Trojans added four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a late lead.
Leah Helmick not only hit a solo home run at the plate, but also threw a complete-game to get the win in the circle.
Lilly Bergren went 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs at the plate. Savannah Hollander had a double and an RBI. Norris had two hits and an RBI as well.
Going into Monday night’s action, Fairfield was 2-6 overall and 0-3 in Southeast Conference play.
