Trojan softball says goodbye to 2019

The Fairfield softball team celebrated another winning season and their seventh consecutive appearance in a Class 4A district final, having made three straight trips to the state tournament, as well, from 2015-2017.

Coaches
Seniors Ellie Baker and Blair Bowman
Baker reached base 10 times for the Trojans, hitting safely seven times and recording three walks. A defensive asset in right field, Baker tracked most fly balls with ease and made a couple of incredible catches from the far corner. Bowman hit .222 with a .323 on-base percentage and saw most of her action as both a pinch-hitter and runner.
Most Valuable
Shaylin Drish
The junior shortstop was second on the team with 42 hits, a .347 average, a .438 slugging clip and .467 on-base percentage. She was tied for tops on the team in triples with two, and led the Trojans in runs scored with 37, walks drawn 26 and stolen bases, 4.
Rookies of the year
Coty Engle and Peyton McCabe
Engle was 9-9 in the circle with a 3.70 earned run average and 42 strikeouts in 94 2/3 innings. The eighth-graders also batted .328 recorded a .390 on-base percentage, a .426 slugging clip and had 11 doubles with 17 RBIs.
McCabe played catcher mostly and hit .300 with a .427 OBP, 20 RBIs and drew 23 walks while only striking out 13 times in 110 at-bats.
Season recap
The Trojans finished 22-19 overall and 13-3 in the Southeast Conference to clinch the crown outright with a 3-2 walk off win in the final regular season SEC contest on the schedule, a home game versus rival Mt. Pleasant. The visiting Panthers had tied the league standings with a 5-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, before the Trojans came-from-behind to conquer their rivals and the SEC.
