FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Trojans softball team kicked off the week in dominant fashion, collecting three convincing wins over two nights.
On Monday, they swept a doubleheader against Fort Madison with scores of 8-0 and 12-4, widening their grip on second place in the Southeast Conference standings. Fairfield followed that up with a 9-1 victory over Cardinal on Tuesday in the teams’ second meeting of the season.
In game one against Fort Madison, the Trojans came out swinging, scoring five runs across the first two innings and never looking back. Pitcher Leah Helmick was untouchable, tossing a five-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts to shut out the Bloodhounds.
Offensively, Helmick also made an impact with three hits and four RBIs. Vanessa Kessel, Maddy Martin, Emma Septer, and Olivia Hollander each added two hits, while Faith Jones and Lilly Bergren contributed an RBI apiece. The Trojans capped the game with three runs in the fifth to secure the 8-0 win.
Game two followed a similar script. Fairfield exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings, jumping out to a 10-1 lead. Although Fort Madison managed three more runs the rest of the way, the Trojans’ early burst proved too much.
Bergren and Jones each notched three hits, with Jones driving in four runs to lead the team. Helmick added a home run among her two hits, finishing with two RBIs. Hollander and Laney Norris also tallied two hits and an RBI each. Haylee Eklund chipped in with a hit and three RBIs.
On the mound, Norris went five innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out one.
The Trojans kept the momentum rolling on Tuesday against Cardinal. Holding a narrow 3-1 lead after three innings, Fairfield broke the game open with two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to pull away for a 9-1 win.
Bergren, Norris, Helmick, and Martin all recorded two hits, while Hollander and Septer added one each.
For Cardinal, Summer LaRue led the way with two hits and an RBI. Autumn Sertterh and Erika Haines each had a hit.
