KNOXVILLE — Fairfield and Knoxville traded punches all night long on Tuesday night, but in the end it was the Trojans who walked out with a non-conference win.
Fairfield knocked off Knoxville 10-7 in a Southeast Conference battle. The Trojans scored five runs early, and five very late to win their fifth game in six tries.
Fairfield held a 5-0 lead early on but the advantage was down to 5-4 before the Trojans’ last at-bat. Fairfield scored five in the seventh, enough to hold off a furious Knoxville rush in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Vanessa Kessel had a huge night, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Maddy Martin went 1-for-3 with four RBIs. Olivia Hollander had a triple and an RBI. Laney Norris was 2-for-3, including a double. Emma Septer finished with two hits, and Lilly Bergren had a hit and an RBI.
Leah Helmick picked up the win in the circle, giving up one earned run over six innings, and striking out four Knoxville batters. Aubrey Ryan and Norris each saw time in the circle as well.
Fairfield is now 20-15. The Trojans host Davis County (16-10) in the Class 3A Region 2 opener on Thursday night.
