FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield girls tennis teams seems destined to make this a memorable half-summer, half-fall season on the courts.
The Trojans, which bring back a wealth of talent from last season, flexed their muscles against Centerville in a non-conference season opener on Thursday, sweeping the Redettes 9-0.
Fairfield had two state-qualifeirs returning at No. 1 and 2, and both Poojita Mukadam and Natalie Steele rolled 8-0 in their first matches of the season.
Ria Ross, a former Maharishi player, and the third-place finisher at last spring’s state-qualifier, stepped in to dominate at No. 3, winning 8-2. Maharishi girls tennis will be playing with Fairfield this season.
At No. 4, Sriya Yammanur picked up an 8-0 win. Maryn Dunkin and Faith Jones did the same at No. 5 and No. 6, rolling 8-0 to clinch the contest after the singles matches were done.
It was much of the same in doubles, as all three duos blew out their opponents.
Mukadam and Steele rolled 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles match. Ross and Yammanur dominated 8-1 in the No. 2 match, and the No. 3 squad of Dunkin and Jones swept 8-0.
The Trojans are getting some love in the early-season polls, as Fairfield showed up in both the Iowa High School Tennis poll and the Coaches Poll. The Trojans are ranked No. 6 and No. 10 in those two polls respectively.
Fairfield opens up conference play this week. The Trojans are set to play four Southeast Conference foes over the next 10 days, with a road match against Keokuk kicking it off on Monday evening and the team’s next home game taking place on Thursday, against Fort Madison.
