Trojan tennis sweeps MP
Fairfield remains undefeated with SEC wins

Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant battled once again on the tennis courts on Thursday night, and again it was the Trojans who earned a double Southeast Conference victory.
The Fairfield boys survived a battle from Mt. Pleasant, beating the Panthers 6-3 at East Lake Park, while the Trojan girls swept MP 9-0 at Fairfield Middle School.
The Trojan boys won five of the six singles matches played at East Lake. Fairfield’s Ruimin Luo won 8-2 in the No. 1 match. Han Wang and Bowen Zhang took the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, 8-5. Rylan Anderson battled out a 9-7 win at No. 5, and Niko Emerson won 8-3 at No. 6.
In doubles, Luo and Wang beat the top Panther team, 8-3.
Mt. Pleasant scored one victory in singles competition, as Lou Schimmelpfennig took the No. 4 match, 8-1.
The Panthers won two doubles matches on the day. Dane Cook and Max Heater prevailed in the No. 2 match, winning 8-5, and Elijah Rynders and Lathan Novak-Watson won 8-5 in the No. 3 match.
On the girls’ side, Natalie Steele took the No. 1 match 8-1 for the Trojans. Emma Wendland won 8-3 at No. 2. Mareyn Dunkin and Faith Jones won the No. 3 and No. 4 matches, 8-1. Faeven Gebremariam won 8-3 at No. 5, and Lola Hatchette won a nail-biter against Mt. Pleasant’s Hannah Villaplaza, beating her 9-7 to preserve the sweep.
The top doubles match was the tightest of the three, as Fairfield’s top team of Steele and Wendland knocked off Bethany Drury and Audrey Richmond 8-5.
Dunkin and Jones took the No. 2 doubles match 8-1 over MP’s Halaina Crane and Zoey Carlsen. Hatchette and Una Carter won 8-4 in the No. 3 match, beating the Panther duo of Villaplaza and Lila Cook.
Fairfield is now a combined 17-0, with the Trojan girls holding a 9-0 record, while the boys sit at 8-0.
Mt. Pleasant is 6-2 on the boys’ side, while the Panther girls are 3-7.
