The Fairfield-Mt. Pleasant tennis rivalry renewed in both towns on Thursday evening. The Trojans won in both, taking out the Panther boys 9-0 in Fairfield, and beating the Panther girls 5-4 in Mt. Pleasant.
The Trojan boys needed one more Southeast Conference win to lock up the conference championship, and Fairfield pulled that feat off with flying colors.
The Fairfield boys won the first four singles matches via the sweep. Ruimin Luo knocked off Phoenix Watson 6-3 and 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Han Wang beat Gavin Ross 7-5 and 6-3 at No. 2. Austin Loria defeated Sawyer Fulton 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 3, and Ethan Cass beat Dane Cook 6-2 and 6-0.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches went down to the wire. Rylan Anderson took down Lou Schimmelpfennig 6-4, 3-6 (10-7), and Niko Emerson knocked off Zach Johnson 6-2, 2-6 (11-9).
The Trojan boys swept the doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Wang and Loria rolled 8-0 over Watson and Scimmelpfennig. Luo and Emerson outlasted Ross and Johnson 8-6 at No. 2, and Cass and Anderson dropped the No. 3 match 8-5.
The two girls’ teams went into doubles tied 3-3. Mt. Pleasant won the first two singles games, as Jana Isanta Vila defeated Natalie Steele 8-1, and Eliana Situmeang beat Emma Wendland 8-2 at No. 2. The Panthers also took the No. 6 match, as Audrey Richmond beat Tula Sorflaten 8-3.
