Trojan wrestling shows fight in loss

FAIRFIELD — The Trojans put up a good fight against the Grayhounds Thursday night, but struggled midway through the dual, falling 55-24.

Fairfield couldn’t have asked for a better start.

Zach Westercamp picked up a quick six points at 126 with a 55-second pin over Burlington’s Titus Counterman.

At 132, Jace Hannes came from behind, after being down 3-5 to pin the Grayhounds Brian Velazquez.

The Trojans found another six points in the form of Brock Curtis at 138. Curtis was down 2-0 early, and came back to pin Matthew Rehman.

From then out, Fairfield would fall in the next five matches, at 145, 152, 160, 170 and 182.

Theodore Metcalf was the last Trojan victory at 195. Metcalf picked up a win by fall over Burlington’s Nolan Simpson.

Fairfield would lose two more matches before forfeiting the final three at 106, 113 and 120.

“I’m really pleased with our effort,” Fairfield head coach Steve Miller said. “The guys went out and wrestled hard. We made some silly mistakes tonight. It started off really good with Zach Westercamp and Jace (Hannes). Then Brock went out and took care of business at 138. At 145, you know Cam (McClain) has to stay under control. He was beating a pretty good wrestler, but slow it down, know where you’re at, don’t get yourself in trouble. Then we just kind of lost our fight there, losing a few in a row there and they knew we were already giving up 18 points.”
