Trojans 9-1 in SEC after sweep

Fairfield softball is now 15-10 overall after sweeping Washington with 4-3 and 5-3 victories Monday night that also improved their mark to 9-1 in the Southeast Conference.

Game one

Eighth grader Coty Engle and freshman Hannah Simpson both went 2-3 to lead the Trojan offense with the pair also each scoring a run and the elder Simpson recording a RBI, as well.

Fairfield took a 1-0 lead after one, but allowed three in the third before responding with a run in the fourth and two decisive runs in the fifth for the 4-3 victory.

Junior Allison Rebling went seven innings and allowed three runs on four hits with five walks and nine strikeouts.

Game two

The Trojans never trailed in the night cap, scoring two in the first and three more in the fourth before Washington bothered responding with two runs, far too late, in the fifth. An attempted comeback in the seventh was minimized to just a run by the Trojan defense as FHS held on for a 5-3 win and the four-game Southeast Conference sweep of the Demons for 2019.

Simpson and Peyton McCabe each recorded two hits and Engle was 1-2 with a double and a walk drawn. Senior Ellie Bake also had several key defensive plays throughout the night and the play of the day was a long-running, diving catch made by left fielder Delaney Breen.

'I knew she was going to get it,” said her sister Danielle who was watching the play unfold from center field.

'I was just like, ‘Wow! I just did that,'” added Delany.

Engle went the first 5 1/3 and allowed two runs off five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Rebling came in for the final 1 2/3 and allowed a run off one hit with one walk and four strikeouts.

Next

Fairfield will host Burlington Wednesday night for a doubleheader and Fort Madison Monday before taking a week off until they host Mt. Pleasant July 1.
