TAMA — After three straight losses, the Fairfield football team found itself back on top on Friday night. The Trojans wiped away a few bad games and dropped South Tama 20-7 on the road for their first Class 3A District 5 victory.
In what would be a defensive battle, the Trojans drew first blood right away, when Julian Pumphrey jumped a pass from the South Tama quarterback just two minutes into the game. Pumphrey ran the ball all the way back to the end zone for a 40-yard pick-six, and it was 7-0 Fairfield early.
Fairfield wouldn’t find the end zone for the rest of the first quarter, but the Trojans would punch one in at the beginning of the second quarter. Sam Weaton capped off a drive with a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line, and it was 14-0.
South Tama cut the lead in half before the break, and threatened to tie the game a couple of different times in the final two quarters.
With Fairfield leading 14-7 and under 2 minutes left on the clock, South Tama held possession deep in its own territory. The Trojan defense came up clutch again, this time forcing a fumble, which wound up in the hands of Fairfield’s Caden Allison, inside South Tama’s 5-yard line.
Fairfield punched it in on another quarterback sneak by Weaton, and that was all she wrote.
It was Fairfield’s third win of the season. The Trojans knocked off Mt. Pleasant and Washington in August and September, and the team now has an October win to add to that total.
Fairfield (3-4) will have a tough home game next week when the Trojans welcome in No. 7 (3A) Solon.
