FAIRFIELD — Fairfield boys basketball suffered its fifth straight loss on Friday night in a Southeast Conference matchup with Keokuk 51-29.
It turned out to be a tough shooting night for the Trojans thanks to some stingy defense by the Chiefs.
Fairfield started the game off on the right foot as they jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead thanks to buckets from Ryan Giberson and Riley Perkins.
However, things quickly shifted as the largest scoring drought of the game hit the Trojans. Fairfield didn’t score again for the rest of the first quarter.
Meanwhile, Keokuk rattled off nine straight points to make it a 10-4 game after the first.
The Trojans’ struggles continued into the second as the Keokuk lead soared to 15-4 before the Trojans first bucket at the 5:23 mark.
Keokuk continued to control as an 8-2 run pushed the Chiefs’ lead to 23-8.
Back-to-back threes from Eli Zillman and Andrew Myers got the Trojans within nine at 23-14, but a 5-0 run to the end of the quarter gave the Chiefs a 28-14 lead at the half.
That proved to be enough for Keokuk as Fairfield could never get back into it. Both squads scored 10 a piece in the third quarter, but a 13-5 fourth period by the Chiefs put a nail in it.
Eli Zillman finished with nine points for the Trojans. Luke Konczal followed with six. Riley Perkins and Andrew Myers both scored five. Ryan Giberson finished with four.
Fairfield drops to 5-11 with the loss and 3-5 in the conference standings.
