Trojans can’t pin Bloodhounds

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield wrestling has shown a lot of improvement through the 2022-23 season thus far.

The Trojans have battled with every Southeast Conference opponent this season and on Thursday they played host to Fort Madison, who has been one of the leagues premier programs.

It was a tough night on the mat for the Fairfield, as the Trojans were winners in just two matches against the Bloodhounds.

Fort Madison won eight straight matches before Cael McCabe got the Trojans on the board at 113, pinning the Bloodhound’s Tateum Schelich in 45 seconds.

The Trojans second victory of the competition came from Julian Pumphrey at 138. Pumphrey pinned Fort Madison’s Calvin Johnson in 3:25.

“I sprawled on a shot and waited for the perfect moment to get a crossface in,” Pumphrey said. “Getting that in helped me get around him. He also brought his leg up, so I pulled that toward me. He dropped to the ground and only had one arm around my leg. I was able to go around quickly and get control of both legs.”

Alyia Abbott picked up a win for the Trojans girls as well, winning by fall in 1:30 at 105. Jaydin Sharfe and Arwyd Hays wrestled as well.

“The great thing is that these kids have good bodies and good minds,” Fairfield head coach Steve Miller said. “I know they've all got great attitudes. They're not afraid to get back in the room and work on things. There are small things we can clean up. That's what we've spent the most time on this year because we see the need for it. We're raw. We've got to clean a lot of technique up.”
