Trojans, Demons, Panthers all fall

It was a rough night for the Union coverage area's three big schools on Thursday night in the second week of Southeast Conference wrestling. Fairfield fell 42-27 to Burlington, Washington was downed by Keokuk, 39-36, and Mt. Pleasant was shut out 81-0 against Ft. Madison.

The Demons and Panthers both wrestled in triangulars, and Washington was able to salvage one win on the night, beating Illini West 40-30. Mt. Pleasant lost 48-33 against Mid-Prairie.

Fairfield was the only Union area big school hosting a meet. The Trojans welcomed Burlington into town. Fairfield led early, taking the 106 lbs. match by forfeit and getting a pin from Jonah Cooper at 120 lbs. Burlington battled back for three-straight wins, but Fairfield retook the lead with wins at 145 lbs. and 152 lbs. Peyton Cline took the 152 lbs. match by pinfall.

Fairfield led 21-15 with six weights to go, but Burlington rattled off five wins in a row, including three pins, to clinch the win before forfeiting the 285 lbs. match.

'We started off really good,” Fairfield coach Steve Miller said. 'I thought we'd have to wrestle really good, but I honestly expected two in. Early on we had a match that didn't go our way and it just had a cascading effect to the rest of the matches. Momentum is such a huge thing, and when you've got it, you have to keep it.”

Washington was nipped by keokuk in the final match of the day. The Demons picked up early pins from Brayden Hartman at 285 lbs. and Jack Kleese at 106 lbs. and eventually worked their lead up to 30-12 with pins from Brandon Dickel at 132 lbs. and Justin Simmering at 138 lbs. After losing the next two, the Demons got a pin from Ayden Frazier at 160 lbs., to lead 36-21 with three matches left.

Keokuk rattled off three wins in a row to close out the night. Those wins included a pin with just 33 seconds left in the 170 lbs. match and a pin at 195 lbs. to close the night out, sandwiching a forfeit at 182 lbs.

Washington's match against Illini west was marred with forfeits, but Simmering did pick up a win by major decision at 138 lbs.

Mt. Pleasant couldn't get the car started at Ft. Madison. THe Bloodhounds swept through the meet, pinning five Panthers in a shutout victory.

The Panthers did have six wins in their loss against Mid-Prairie. Carson Coleman (120 lbs.) and Gannon McNamee (138 lbs.) each had a pin.
