Trojans downed at No. 9 Solon

SOLON - The Fairfield baseball team was upended in nonconference play on Wednesday night when the Trojans played at No. 9 Solon. The Spartans pulled away in the fifth inning and never looked back, knocking off the Trojans 9-3.
Solon scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Fairfield starter Bradley Smithburg. Smithburg settled down and blanked the Spartans over the next two innings, but Solon put up thre emore runs int eh fourth, and led the game 5-0.
Fairfield put up two runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-2 to put a little pressure on the hosting Spartans, but Solon bounced right back with four runs in the fifth to grab a 9-2 lead.
Fairfield cut the lead to 9-3 with a run in the sixth inning, but the damage had already been done, and the Trojans fell to 0-2 on the year.
Smithburg led the team at the plate, going 2-3with a double, the team's only extra-base hit of the night.
Nate Woodburn went 1-2 with a run scored. Landon Kooiker was 0-2 with a runs cored. Elan Ledger went 0-3 with a run scored, and Carter Ferrel finished the night 0-4 with one RBI.
Smithburg was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs (two earend) over 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out four batters int he loss and gave up three walks.
Josh Brewington relieved Smithburg and pitched one-third of an inning, giving up five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. Nate Woodburn threw two shutout innings and struck out five Solon batters.
