Trojans downed by Assumption

MUSCATINE - No. 2. Davenport Assumption and No. 6 Fairfield faced off in the Class 3A Substate 5 final on Wednesday in Muscatine. The Knights held on for a 3-2 win against the Trojans.
Muscatine scored the first three runs of the game, putting up three in the third inning off Trojan starter Kosta Papazogolou. Austin Simpson hit a two-run home run in the fourth, but that's all the Trojans would get.
Assumption moved on to the Class 3A tournament, where they earned the No. 2 seed. They'll play on Tuesday, July 30 at 7 p.m., against seventh-seeded Boone.
Other teams in the Class 3A bracket include top-seeded Cedar Rapids Xavier, as well as 2019 Mt. Pleasant opponents Marion and Centerville. Mation earned the No. 4 seed and Centerville picked up the No. 6 seed.
A couple more area teams will be playing at Principal Park in Des Moines during the state tournament. SEISC North Division team Pekin advanced to state and will be the No. 8 seed in Class 1A touranment. Central Lee, a South Division squad, advanced in Class 2A, earning the No. 4 seed.
The state touranment will begin on Friday, July 26, where Pekin will play No. 1 Newman Catholic in the day's second game, at 1:30 p.m. Central Lee will play on Monday, July 29, at 1:30 p.m., against Des Moines Christian.
