ALBIA - The Fairfield basketball teams played a couple of thrillers in Albia on Monday night, but neither Trojan squad could come away with a home victory. The Fairfield girls lost 47-45, and the boys fell 48-46.
Fairfield and Albia traded blows all game long in the girls game. The Lady Dees edged the Trojans in the first three quarters. Albia held a 11-10 advantage after one quarter and 20-18 at halftime lead, and then stretched it to 31-27 after three.
Fairfield had its highest output of the night in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Dees 18-16 in the final eight minutes, but it wasn't enough.
Danielle Breen scored 14 points to lead the Trojans in scoring. Olivia Jones scored 10. Delaney Breen finished with eight. Mallory Lyon and Hannah Simpson each had six points and seven rebounds, and Brynley Allison scored one.
The Fairfield boys erupted in the first quarter to lead the two-loss Blue Demons 26-8 after the first quarter. Albia battled back to cut that advantage to 35-23 at halftime and put the Trojans down by one, at 39-38, heading into the final period.
Down two points in the final ticks, Fairfield's J.J. Lane nearly had his second game-winner in two games, but he let the shot go just after the buzzer.
Max Weaton finished the night with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans. Lane had 14, and Tate Allen scored 11 to give Fairfield three double-digit scorers. Isaac Harris had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Evan Haines scored two points.
