Oskaloosa (21-17) won a 4-2 game to open Tuesday?s doubleheader before using an eight-run fourth inning to take the nightcap 9-1.
?The goal was to get all the pitchers a tune-up and keep pitch counts low so they?ll be fresh come Friday,? said head coach Josh Allison. ?It would have been nice to go into districts on a roll, but it didn?t happen, so now we?ll find out what the boys are made of.?
The Trojans (13-26) open Class 3A district play Friday at Centerville.
Tuesday, Fairfield used a total of seven pitchers across the two games and received strong efforts from the freshman duo of Joe Hietpas and Austin Gridley in game one. Hietpas struck out three and gave up five hits and two earned runs. Gridley relieved him for the final three innings where he allowed three hits and two more earned runs.
Corbin Harwood and Josh Dimmitt each had a pair of singles to tally the Trojans? four hits in the game.
In the nightcap, Oskaloosa burned through three Fairfield pitchers while plating eight runs in the fourth inning to take the game. Darrin Dimmitt threw three innings of scoreless ball before running into trouble in the fourth.
Nik Fitch crossed the plate for the Trojans? lone run in the top of the seventh. Harwood had another multi-hit game to lead the five-hit offense.
The Trojans? district game against host Centerville will begin at approximately 7 p.m. The other semifinal featuring Knoxville and Oskaloosa will begin at 5 p.m. The winners will advance to the district final scheduled for Monday back in Centerville.
