FORT MADISON — The Fairfield football team had a shot to start the 2023 season 2-0 after a strong start defensively in Fort Madison on Friday night, but the Bloodhounds eventually scrapped back to earn a 21-14 victory.
Fairfield held a rare 5-0 lead after one quarter of play. The Trojans connected on a 23-yard Carter Moore field goal early on, and the defense pinned the Bloodhounds back and earned a safety to give the Trojans a 5-spot.
Over half of the game’s scoring game in the second quarter. Fort Madison scored first to take a 7-5 advantage. Fairfield struck back when Luke Konczal busted free for a 51-yard touchdown run, but the Bloodhounds marched right back down to score on a touchdown pass. At the break, Fort Madison led 14-12.
The only other Trojan score on the day was another safety, which tied the game at 14-14 in the third quarter.
Fort Madison’s game-winning touchdown came late in the fourth. With 4 minutes and 33 seconds left, the Bloodhounds scored on a short rushing touchdown by junior Marcus Guzman.
Fairfield attempted to drive the field to tie it in the final minutes, but an interception spelled the end for the Trojans.
Fairfield rushed the ball for 202 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans passed for 57 yards, but Fort Madison pulled down four interceptions on the night.
Fairfield is now 1-1 on the season. The Trojans will play their first home game this week when the team takes on Highway 1 rival Washington (1-1).
