BURLINGTON — The Southeast Conference girls tennis tournament was held in Burlington on Thursday, and Fairfield came away with three Top-3 finishes.
The Trojans had the second-place finisher in both singles and doubles, while also taking a third place in singles competition.
In singles, top-seeded Poojita Mukadam took second-place overall for Fairfield, due in part to an injury that kept her from finishing off the championship match.
Mukadam won her opening match 6-2, 6-0, and then cruised on to the championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the semifinals. After winning the first set in the championship against Keokuk’s Nevaeh Logan, Mukadam had to bow out in the next set.
Natalie Steele nearly made it an All-Fairfield final in singles. Steele cruised through her first singles match, winning 6-1 and 6-2, before facing Logan in the semifinals.
Steele beat Logan 6-1 in the first set, but dropped the next set, 6-2, and fell 10-6 in the 10-point tiebreaker. She was able to rebound and win the third-place match.
Emma Wendland and Sriya Yammanur took second place in a competitive doubles tournament. The two beat Mt. Pleasant’s Halaina Crane and Zoey Carlsen in the opening match, then knocked off a Keokuk squad 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 in the semifinals.
In the doubles final, Wendland and Yammanur lost to the top Burlington squad, falling 6-4 and 6-2.
The Trojans also had a fourth-place doubles performance. Mareyn Dunkin and Faith Jones placed fourth, giving the Trojans another Top-4 spot.
Mt. Pleasant’s best singles performance came from Bethany Drury, who finished seventh. The doubles team of Crane and Carlsen finished seventh as well.
