After withstanding for the first half, fatigue set in for the Washington boys? soccer team on Thursday night.
Fairfield exploded for seven second-half goals in their match at Washington High School, and the Demons didn?t have an answer, falling 9-0 to the Trojans.
?We were exhausted from Tuesday and the really aggressive game with Mid-Prairie,? Washington head coach Sally Hart said. ?I can say we got everyone in the game, so that?s good to get everyone experience, and next time we play them, we?ll all be ready to go.?
The Demons fell to 1-3 with the loss, and open conference play with an 0-1 record.
Washington keeper Thomas Zimmer made 11 saves in the loss, while Fairfield keeper Robert Culp made four saves in the shutout.
The Trojans played with the wind for the first half, but couldn?t break through the Demon defense until 22 minutes in, when Soloman Constant broke free of the Demons and beat Zimmer for the first goal.
Constant struck again in the 37th minute, knocking the ball in from a crowd in the middle, then nearly picked up the hat trick at the buzzer, but was robbed by the post going into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Trojans found their groove, as Constant netted two more goals to make it 4-0 in the 48th minute.
?(It was) exhaustion and we needed to communicate a lot more,? Hart said. ?We started to break down.?
Brayden Miller added a pair of goals in the 64th and 66th minutes, while Shawn Spurrier netted a pair of goals, and Nicholas Frisbie added one of his own.
The Demons will look to bounce back from a pair of losses this week with a contest at Mediapolis on Monday afternoon.
