Southeast Iowa Union offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
The Union’s three big school baseball teams went at it a total of 10 times, and there was a clear hierarchy, despite plenty of close games between Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Washington.
Not only were the Trojans the top team of the three Union Area Southeast Conference squads, but Fairfield reigned supreme overall in the SEC, a sure sign of a big representation on the All-Union list.
Fairfield leads the way for the 2025 All-Union big school baseball lists, including both coach and captain honors.
COACH: Josh Allison, Fairfield
Fairfield’s head coach led his team back from a two-game hole to secure the 2025 SEC championship with a winner-take all victory against Burlington in the final game of the season.
Fairfield went 21-11 overall and 13-2 in conference play to secure its second-straight SEC title. The Trojans went 7-0 against Mt. Pleasant and Washington, including a thrilling 3-1 Substate tournament win over the Panthers.
Fairfield trailed just 1-0 against eventual state champion Pella in the Class 3A Substate 6 semifinals, before giving up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to fall 6-0.
CAPTAIN: Dain Burkhart, junior, Fairfield
Nobody was as valuable on both sides of the diamond as Trojan junior Dain Burkhart, who earns the 2025 captain honors.
Burkhart hit .391 this year with four doubles and 24 RBIs. He scored 28 runs on the season as well.
Burkhart once again served as the Trojans’ ace. On the mound, the junior hurler went 8-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 28 strikeouts.
PITCHER: Grayson Lowery, sophomore, Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant’s sophomore arm climbed up the ranks in Southeast Iowa this season. Lowery went 6-1 on the season, finishing the year with a 1.98 ERA and 41 strikeouts.
At the plate, Lowery finished the year with a .326 batting average, three doubles and 20 RBIs.
PITCHER: Voss Richardson, sophomore, Fairfield
Fairfield’s arms helped carry the team to an SEC championship this summer, and sophomore Richardson was a big part of that push.
Richardson went 3-4 this season with a 2.27 ERA and 30 strikeouts, while holding opposing batters to an anemic .160 batting average.
At the plate, Richardson hit .289 with seven doubles and 18 RBIs.
CATCHER: Payton Walker, senior, Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant’s senior catcher was asked to do a lot for the Panthers this year, and he came through in his last summer of baseball.
Walker hit .386 with eight doubles and 26 RBIs, and while he spent most of his time behind the plate, he did pitch in six games, going 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA and 23 strikeouts.
He also had a miraculous ability to draw hit-by-pitches, getting clunked 20 times over the year.
INFIELD: Luke Konczal, senior, Fairfield
Fairfield’s senior first baseman lived on the basepaths this summer. He finished the year with a .481 batting average, and got on with 20 walks and five hit-by-pitches to add on to that mark.
Konczal led the Trojans with 12 doubles this year, coled the squad with two home runs and added one triple to his season total. He also led the Trojans with 41 runs scored.
INFIELD: Cason Miller, senior, Fairfield
Fairfield’s senior shortstop battled through injuries this year and still put together one of the best seasons in the conference.
Miller hit .382 this season, collecting five doubles, two triples and one home run in just 19 games. He knocked in 18 runs on the season.
INFIELD: J.C. Sitar, senior, Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant’s senior first baseman provided a lot of the power for the Panthers this summer.
Sitar finished the season with a .411 batting average. He led the team with 11 doubles, two home runs and 39 RBIs.
INFIELD: Brayton Hutson, senior, Mt. Pleasant
Hutson, a senior second-baseman, led the Panthers with a .414 batting average this season, while also drawing a team-high 21 walks.
Hutson finished the year with three doubles, one triple and 18 RBIs.
OUTFIELD: Aiden Westercamp, junior, Fairfield
Fairfield’s junior outfielder/catcher was the guy you wanted up at the plate with runners on this season.
Westercamp hit .384 this summer with nine doubles, one triple and an incredible 40 RBIs, 16 more than the next player on the team.
OUTFIELD: Conner Leyden, senior, Washington
The Demons had a tough time winning games this year, but Leyden still provided quite the spark both in the outfield and on the pitcher’s mound.
Leyden led Washington with a .295 ERA, six doubles and 12 RBIs at the plate. On the mound, he finished 2-7 with a 6.54 ERA and 24 strikeouts.
OUTFIELD: Ethan Bisgard, sophomore, Fairfield
Fairfield’s sophomore outfielder made big jumps at the plate this year, hitting .333 with six doubles and two home runs.
Bisgard finished with 18 RBIs this year, and is a key part of a bright future for Trojan baseball.
UTILITY: Zach Newton, senior, Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant’s senior pitcher and third baseman was the definition of a utility player for the team this season.
Newton hit .232 with eight doubles and 19 RBIs at the plate. He was also one of the top pitchers in the area, finishing with a 5-4 with a 4.29 ERA and a team-leading 45 strikeouts.
UTILITY: Dayson Workman, junior, Fairfield
