BURLINGTON - The Fairfield football team enters their Week 2 road game at West Burlington on a high. The Trojans beat Knoxville 15-7 last Friday night, washing away a winless 2019 and snapping and 11-game losing streak.
On Friday night, the Trojans will look for their first 2-0 start since the 2016 season when they roll into Burlington for their first road game of the year. The 1-0 Trojans take on an 0-1 WB-ND team who was beaten 23-8 at Fort Madison in Week 1.
Fairfield is coming off a great defensive effort in Week 1. After allowing a Knoxville touchdown in the first quarter, the Trojans blanked the Panthers in three straight periods to grind out an eight-point victory.
The Trojans didn't light up the scoreboard offensively, but did capitalize enough times to get the win. Fairfield scored once in the first quarter and once in the second quarter, defeating the Panthers even though Knoxville outdid them in both passing and rushing yards.
Fairfield will need another big game out of senior running back Landen Schafer, who ran for 86 yards and a touchdown to pace the offense. Fairfield's passing game also will look to take a jump after sophomore Isaac Harris threw for 66 yards and a touchdown in his first game as starting quarterback.
West Burlington had a rough time scoring against the Bloodhounds, but they did get a nice game out of running back Travain Donaldson. The sophomore ran for 123 yards and a touchdown.
The Falcons had a rough time Passing the ball last week. Starting quarterback Hayden Vandenberg went 4-18 for 52 yards and two interceptions.
This will be the third matchup in the last five years between Fairfield and West Burlington, with the Falcons taking the previous two. West Burlington won the 2016 matchup 20-13 and took the 2017 game 34-14.
Attendance for Friday night's game will be limited. Each participant and coach of an event will be allowed up to four reservations for their family. Any other person wanting to attend also will be given up to four reservations until capacity is met.
