FAIRFIELD — There are a few similarities between the two high school football teams that are set to square off at Fairfield High School on Friday night.
Fairfield and Mediapolis may both come in at 0-2, but both teams were right in both losses, making it an enticing showdown as both programs look for their first wins of the season.
And to make it a little more interesting, the game will be played on 2025 Homecoming night, perhaps the perfect concoction for a first Trojan win.
The two teams are less than 45 minutes away from each other, but the schools haven't played in the bound era. Of course, this will be the first of two-straight years where the Trojans and Bulldogs go toe to toe.
As Union area readers have figured out by now, Fairfield relies heavily on its running game. The Trojans, as a team, have ran for 587 yards and seven touchdowns this season, while quarterback Voss Richardson has been an efficient 7-for-12 throwing the ball, racking up 117 yards and a score.
Fairfield currently has three runners over 100 yards. Zandrik Allison has rumbled for 184 yards and a touchdown. Ethan Bisgard has 158 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and Richardson has run for 106 yards and a score himself.
Mediapolis opts to throw the ball much more. Quarterback Quincy King has thrown 49 times, completing 24 passes for 255 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The top receiver for Mediapolis is Gannon Gunn, who has caught 11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs have just over 150 yards rushing this year. Parker Holsteen leads the team with 90 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Mediapolis is also dangerous in the return game. Senior Nathan Schmidgall brought one kick return 88 yards to the end zone against Mt. Pleasant.
Kickoff for Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m.
