GRINNELL - Outscored 34-25 in the middle two quarters Tuesday, Fairfield lost a girls basketball game for the second consecutive day despite Mallory Lyon's and Danielle Breen's scoring totals, falling to Grinnell 57-51 in a nonconference game.
A 10-9 lead after the first quarter disappeared by halftime when it was a two-point deficit at 25-23 and an 18-12 third quarter put the scoreboard at 43-35 in the home team's favor.
'We gave a great effort playing on back-to-back nights,” Fairfield head coach Pat Pacha said. 'Grinnell's 3-pointers were nine to three in their favor.”
The six points difference in the final score could be found downtown, where the Tigers launched 31 3-pointers.
Lyon and Breen, both juniors, combined to score 30 points but the Tigers had a junior duo combine for 38 points and 12 rebounds. Ivey Schmidt went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line on her way to 22 points and Meredith McKnight added 16 points. The two were a combined 5-for-13 on 3-pointers.
Grinnell went 14-for-19 at the foul line. Fairfield was 10-for-16.
Breen poured in 18 points with three rebounds and two assists. Lyon had 12 points and four rebounds.
Fairfield's Hannah Simpson scored seven points with four rebounds and two assists. Brynley Allison had five points and a steal. Olivia Jones contributed five rebounds, three points and two assists. Anna Dunlap hit a free throw and snagged four rebounds.
Grinnell has a 7-5 record and Fairfield is 5-3. The Trojans play at Burlington Friday in a boy/girl doubleheader starting at 6:15 p.m.
Fairfield's Mallory Lyon shoots in a home game earlier this season. Lyon had 12 points Tuesday in a 57-51 loss at Grinnell. (Doug Brenneman/Union)
