CENTERVILLE ? Eight errors contributed to a 13-3 loss to open Wednesday?s doubleheader at Centerville, but Fairfield righted the ship to take game two 8-5.
The Trojans broke a 3-3 tie with five runs in the top of the sixth and final inning to win the nightcap. Brandon Veirs came up with the big hit ? a bases-loaded single to bring home Brent Buch and Jordan Whitney that turned out to be enough to hold off a Centerville rally in the bottom half of the inning.
The two runs made the score 7-3.
Veirs also relieved Ryan Gaumer on the mound to get the final two outs. After a first-pitch passed ball plated a run to make the score 8-5, the senior proceeded to strike out the only two batters he faced and close out the victory.
?We did a good job of executing late and found a way to win it. There were some pressure situations that are key learning tools for a young group to learn what they are made of,? said head coach Josh Allison. ?We had several guys with big hits, and several of our younger guys came through for us.?
Gaumer started the game and allowed three hits while working around seven walks over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win.
All three Fairfield wins this season have been credited to different pitchers.
Brandon Buch drove in Tyler Cooksey to get Fairfield going in the sixth. Brandon Haines added another RBI in the inning to make the score 8-3.
Veirs finished the game 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in, Kooper Dahlstrom also had a double and Jordan Whitney scored three runs.
In the opener, Centerville scored six unearned runs as part of an eight-run third inning that blew the game open. With the big inning, the Reds took a 13-1 lead and ended the game by the 10-run rule two innings later.
Fairfield starter Derek Fishel was chased after 2 1/3 innings. He gave up seven hits and three walks before Darrin Dimmitt pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
Joe Hietpas hit a two-RBI double for the Trojans, Veirs had the other RBI and Whitney and Josh Dimmitt scored runs.
Next up for Fairfield, weather pending, is tonight?s Southeast Conference doubleheader at home against Keokuk. The Trojans will play a tournament in Madrid Saturday.
