BURLINGTON — Fairfield boys basketball kicked off its season on Monday night with the Hall of Pride Scrimmage against the Nikes of Notre Dame.
The game doesn’t count to the Trojans regular season record, but it was their first taste of competitive action. Fairfield battle with Notre Dame all night long, but the Trojans came up short after four periods of action 54-36.
Things didn’t start off on the greatest note for the Trojans as the Nikes scored eight unanswered over the opening two minutes.
Fairfield bounced back though as a pair of two’s from Riley Perkins and Ben Boatright as well as a free throw from Ousman Saine made it just a three point game, 9-6, after the first period.
However, the Trojans could never get over the hump.
Notre Dame began to find its offensive stride in the second, outscoring Fairfield 17-7 in the quarter for a 26-13 lead at the break.
The theme continued after the half as the Nikes scored another 17 to the Trojans eight. Fairfield ended strong, edging the Nikes 5-2 in the final minute, but they still held a 43-21 lead heading into the final quarter of action.
Fairfield topped Notre Dame in the fourth, 15-11, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
The Trojans will kick off their season on Tuesday, Nov. 28 against Oskaloosa at home.
