WELLMAN ? One day removed from a big victory over tenth-ranked Mount Pleasant, the Fairfield baseball team took a step backward Tuesday night with Mid-Prairie right there giving them a shove.
The Golden Hawks are no stranger to bringing teams back down to earth however, having already compiled 25 wins this season, and wasted no time doing so Tuesday. Mid-Prairie pounded out 15 hits compared to just four from the Trojans en route to a four-inning 15-0 victory.
Fairfield?s only error of the game got the ball rolling for Mid-Prairie with just one out in the first inning, and they never looked back. Colin Brenneman and Drew Yoder scored on a Trojan fielding error for the first runs in that first inning. A double by Josh Boone and a single off Keaton Redlinger?s bat drove in two more to cap the four-run first.
Mid-Prairie added three more in the third inning before the floodgates officially burst open in the fourth. It took Fairfield two pitching changes and 11 batters to record an out in the fourth ? an inning that the Golden Hawks chalked up eight more runs and sent the Trojan home early by way of the mercy rule.
Jeremy Clark was charged with the loss on the mound for Fairfield as Jake Dunbar, Grant Liebe, Jerred Leonard and Brandon Veirs recorded the only Trojan hits. Cody Moran and Leonard made relief appearances in the fourth inning.
Fairfield will head back into Southeast Conference play Thursday on the road against Washington ? a team they split a doubleheader with earlier this season.
Fairfield softball downed twice by No. 6 Albia
The Fairfield softball team gathered just one hit against Albia pitcher Ariel Kirk in a game one 2-0 loss Tuesday night.
Class 2A sixth-ranked Albia then took game two by a score of 5-4 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Mackenzie Laux didn?t allow an earned run and gave up just four hits, but was tagged with the game one loss. Allison Delker had the only hit for the Trojans. Kirk struck out six as Kaylee Hutt and Kylee Coughlin scored the only two runs.
In game two, Fairfield took a 4-3 lead through six innings after Gretchen Granneman led the 10-hit offensive charge going 3-4 with an RBI followed by Heather Mason?s 2-3 performance. Katie Anderson, Tori Ogden, Delker and Mason scored the four Fairfield runs.
Other Trojan hits came from Samantha Nystrom, Rachel Swanson, Delker, Anderson, and Ogden.
The Trojans drop to 17-19 on the year with two games remaining before tournament play begins Saturday. Tonight, Fairfield will finish a game at Centerville from June 23 in which the score is tied 1-1 in the seventh inning followed by the second game of the doubleheader. After Thursday?s match up with Centerville, the Trojans draw SEC foe Fort Madison to open up the class 3A tournament.
