Trojans out-horse Washington girls

With two minutes to play in the first half, it looked like the Washington girls? soccer team was going to get to a much-needed halftime down by only two goals, but Fairfield?s Kristen Burnstedt had something to say about that.
The Trojan freshman knocked in back-to-back goals in the 37th and 38th minute of the match, putting Washington in a 4-0 deficit at the break.
The Trojans used that momentum, as well as another goal from Burnstedt who scored four goals in the game, to dispatch its conference foe 6-0 on Thursday afternoon.
?It puts us in a good position for conference,? Fairfield head coach Michiel Hekker said. ?It?s getting us ready for the big games coming up next week. With Keokuk coming up (on Thursday), that?ll be a big one. This momentum will help take us to that next game.?
The win completed a sweep of the first official week of the season for the Trojans, who are now 3-0 on the year, and have outscored opponents 16-2.
Of those 16 goals, 10 have come from Burnstedt, who is looking to help her Trojans have a big season this season.
?At first I was kind of tired, but I just got out there and did what I love to do,? Burnstedt said. ?It?s really great, because we are starting strong and have won all of our games so far. It?s going to be a great season.?
Washington fell to 0-4 with the loss, having lost all three of its games this week by a combined score of 23-2.
Head coach Kyle Collins is looking for his team to stay focused heading into next week, and he said he expects them to work hard in practice to recover.
?They need to get their heads in the game,? Collins said. ?Everyone needs to be on the same page, and it needs to be a team effort. When we do click, we keep the ball on their half for four or five minutes. We have to do that the whole game.?
Fairfield got on the board in the 16th minute when Ryan Pate beat Demon goalie Stephanie Evans in the lower right corner of the goal in the 16th minute.
Burnstedt joined the scoring in the 25th minute, before Washington started to control the ball a bit more, and threatened multiple times over the next 10 minutes.
A late first-half formation change by the Trojans caught Washington off guard and led to Burnstedt?s two late goals which gave Fairfield a 4-0 lead.
?We switched our formation up a little bit and put our speed players on the wings,? Hekker said. ?Washington?s goalie (Stephanie Evans) is really good, and we had a number of shots on target, which is great, but we didn?t score. We had to move people into position to get goals.?
An own-goal by Washington and another Burnstedt goal put this game in the books for the Trojans.
Fairfield will take on Knoxville at home on Monday evening, as it looks to keep its perfect season alive, while Washington will host Keokuk during a boys-girls? doubleheader on Tuesday.
