BURLINGTON — Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant traveled to Dankwardt Park for the 2023 Southeast Conference girls tennis tournament on Thursday, and though it wasn’t a perfect day for the Union area teams, the Trojans and Panthers did scoop up a few wins.
Fairfield came into the tournament having tied for second in the conference in the regular season, splitting that honor with both Fort Madison and Keokuk.
The Trojans had two competitors in the singles tournament, both of which were defeated in the first round. Sydney Wells lost to Burlington’s Annalise Buxton 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) and Maddie Greiner fell 6-0, 6-0 to Keokuk’s Audrey Robinson.
Wells went on to win her two consolation matches, beating Lauren Otte from Fort Madison 8-5, and Hannah Wegmann from Burlington 8-6. Greiner finished eighth after losing her next two matches.
In doubles competition, Fairfield’s Wendland and Adhikari lost 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to Burlington’s No. 2 team in the first round. They went on to beat Mary Kate Peterson and Victoria Smith from Mt. Pleasant before losing the fifth place match.
Una Carter and Lola Hatchette played in the play in game and fell to Fort Madison’s No. 2 team, winning the first set 7-6 (7-2) but dropping the next match 6-2, and the tiebreaker 10-6. They would be defeated in the ninth-place match as well.
Mt. Pleasant finished fifth in the regular season. In the tournament, the Panthers sent Audrey Richmond and Bethany Drury into the singles competition. Both were in the play in matches, with Drury falling 6-2, 6-2 to Wegmann of Burlington, and Richmond losing 6-0, 6-2 against Otte of Fort Madison. Drury swept Richmond 9-0 in the ninth-place match.
In doubles, Mt. Pleasant’s duo of Eliana Situmeang and Eva Rounceville scooped up the lone Panther win in the winner’s bracket, defeating Keokuk’s top doubles team 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
The Panther squad lost its next match to eventual champion Mosley and McGinty of Burlington, and finished in fourth after losing the third-place match.
Mary Kate Peterson and Victoria Smith narrowly fell in their quarterfinal, dropping a match to Fort Madison’s second doubles team 6-4 and 7-5. That team was also defeated in the seventh-place match.
