Trojans, Panthers, Demons play weekend tournaments
Area volleyball teams play one more time before SEC Day 2

OSKALOOSA — Tuesday is one of the biggest nights of volleyball for the Union area big schools, and all three prepared with some tournament action over the weekend.
Just ahead of Day 2 of the Southeast Conference tournament, both Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant were in Oskaloosa on Saturday, while Washington traveled to Pella.
The Panthers and Trojans went at it for the fourth time this season in Oskaloosa. Fairfield wound up on top, beating its Highway 34 rivals 21-15 and 21-16.
Lilly Bergren led the Trojans with five kills and nine digs in the win. Faith Jones finished with 11 assists and two kills. Grace Lyon and Leah Helmick each had two kills.
Mt. Pleasant’s Alex Scott tallied five kills and 10 digs to lead the Panthers. Addison Clark finished with four kills. Kynlee White, Abby Carthey and Zoey Atkinson each had one. Carthey led the Panthers with eight assists.
Fairfield had three wins in the tournament. The Trojans took down Marshalltown 21-14, 21-12, and defeated Des Moinese North 21-9, 21-12.
Mt. Pleasant’s lone win came at the demise of Des Moines North. The Panthers won that match 21-11, 21-11.
Washington couldn’t quite pick up a win at the Pella tournament, going 0-5. The Demons had a close call against Knoxville, but fell 19-21, 21-19, 15-12.
The Demons go into Tuesday night’s SEC action with a 3-0 record in conference tournament play. Fairfield is 2-1 going into Day 2, while Mt. Pleasant is 0-2.
