The first full day of Southeast Conference wrestling took place on Thursday night, and after one day of league play, Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Washington are all 1-0.
The Trojans were the lone team playing at home, and Fairfield used that home mat advantage to pull out a 42-41 victory. Mt. Pleasant traveled to Ft. Madison, winning 45-35, and Washington blasted Keokuk 47-21.
Though Fairfield was able to stave off the visiting Grayhounds, the Trojans only won three matches that took place, getting almost half their points from Burlington forfeits.
Among the Trojan winners were Alex Hudson, who picked up a 37-second pin at 215 pounds, Noah Patel pinned his man in 1:02 at 106, Aiden Holthus picked up a pin in 1:10 at 157.
“No matter what, it’s always good to get a win,” said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. “But overall, I’m pretty disappointed in the way that we performed. We should have wrestled a lot better, and we didn’t.”
Defending conference champion Mt. Pleasant pulled out a 10-point win on the road thanks in part to seven pinfalls at the Hound Dome.
Aven Beauchamp (106), Levi Evans (120< Jefferson Avalos Ramirez (132), Charlie Bohnenkamp (138), Kolbein Ostby (144), Keegan Birdsell (165) and Juan Lopez (285) all picked up pins to score six team points apiece, while Ramzy Davis (157) won his match via decision.
Washington had five pins in Keokuk. Joseph Schreiber (120), Caden Greiner (144), Jace Kinzenbaw (157), Cash Vargas (165) and Blaine Rees (190) all picked up pins, while Mark Chenoweth won via technical fall at 175 pounds.
In girls’ duals, Burlington beat Fairfield 60-24. Ft. Madison downed Mt. Pleasant 54-18, and Washington and Keokuk split the dual 18-18, but the Demons were awarded the conference win on a tiebreaker.
Fairfield had four pins on the girls’ side, as June Conner (100), Kensley Fligg (115), Bailey Belzer (155) and Samantha Lyons (170) picked up pins.
Mt. Pleasant had two pins, as Paris Phosy won at 115, and Quintrie Lee won at 120.
Washington’s lone win on the mats came from Nora Soutner, who pinned her opponent at 125 pounds.
