BURLINGTON — Both the Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant girls tennis teams showed out in Southeast Conference battles on Thursday evening.
The Trojans took over first place alone in the SEC, beating also-unbeaten Burlington 7-2. Meanwhile, the Panthers got on the board with an 8-1 win in Keokuk.
Fairfield flexed its muscle in a battle of the Top-2 teams in the conference, grabbing five wins in singles to end all hope of a Grayhound win early.
Poojita Mukadam cruised to victory in No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. Natalie Steele did even better in the No. 2 match, taking it 6-0, 6-0.
Ria Ross was victorious with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Sriya Yammanur battled for a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 4 singles, and Mareyn Dunkin pulled out a 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5 win at No. 5 singles.
The lone loss for Fairfield in singles went to Faeven Gebremariam, who fell 3-6, 6-0, 10-7.
In doubles, the team of Mukadam and Steele dominated the No. 1 match, winning 6-1 and 6-0. The No. 2 team of Ross and Yammanur won 6-5 and 6-4. The No. 3 team of Dunkin and Gebremariam fell 5-7, 6-3, 11-9.
Fairfield then went on to compete in a stacked Pella tournament on Saturday, where the Trojans finished third place out of 15 teams, scoring 86.5 points in the tourney.
Mt. Pleasant rolled on the road to put a victory up in the SEC standings at Keokuk.
Lila Cook won a tough No. 1 singles match 10-7 to get things started off right. Mia Gray dominated in the No. 2 match, winning 10-2.
Bella Dodds won the No. 4 singles match, 10-1. Lianah Phangchanthong took the No. 5 match, 10-5, and Shaye Barbee took the No. 6 match by forfeit.
The only loss for the Panthers went to Katana Phangchanthong, who fell 10-5 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Cook and Dodds fought to an 10-8 win in the No. 10 match. Gray and Katana Phangchanthong won 10-5 at No. 2 doubles, and the team of Lianah Phangchanthong and Barbee won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
The Trojans (4-0) will travel to play against the Panthers (1-2) on Tuesday at East Lake Park. That game is a makeup game from a rainout earlier in the season.
