FAIRFIELD — The Southeast Conference boys wrestling race continued to heat up on Thursday night in Fairfield, and it was accompanied by one of the closest girls duals this area has ever seen, as the hosting Trojans battled to two victories over Highway 34 rival Mt. Pleasant.
Fairfield won two Southeast Conference duals, beating the Panthers on a 30-30 tiebreaker in the girls’ meet, then staying alive in the boys’ championship race with a 45-36 victory.
The Fairfield girls needed to win just one of the two matches taking place on the mat. Mt. Pleasant’s Paris Phosy pinned Fairfield’s Kensley Fligg at 115 pounds, but Fairfield’s Kendra Allison picked up a meet-clinching pin over Mt. Pleasant’s Courtney Smith at 235.
Due to each team winning four matches due to forfeits, the match was 30-30 after all weights were done. The Trojans won 31-30 on the seventh tiebreaker, which came down to first points scored. Fairfield’s first points were a takedown, while Mt. Pleasant’s was an escape.
Fairfield had five pins in the boys’ dual. Noah Patel (106), Cael McCabe (12), Dusty Haynes (150), Calvin McClain (190) and Alex Hudson (215) all finished on top.
Fairfield also got a huge comeback win from Jasper Carpenter at 132, a match that changed the flow of the meet.
“There were a couple or three toss up matches there, even at the start of the night,” said Fairfield head coach Steve Miller. “I’ve been on Noah Patel about starting the meet off right, and when he wrestles the way he’s capable of wrestling, he brings the whole team with him.”
Coach Miller also spoke about Carpenter’s comeback victory. The freshman was nearly pinned by Mt. Pleasant’s Lane Beckler, but fought back to win 11-9.
“I knew he could give him a tough match, but to be able to come all the way back? That was awesome,” Miller said.
Mt. Pleasant got pins from Levi Evans (126), Charlie Bohnenkamp (138), Kolbein Ostby (144), Ramzy Davis (157), Jack Newman (165) and Juan Lopez (285). The Panthers had to forfeit two weight classes.
“We had some guys out of the lineup, so we had some of the guys bump up to help us fill the lineup just to try and have a chance,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Anthony Blint. “Some of the matches just didn’t come out the way we wanted.”
The win for the Fairfield boys brings the Trojans to 3-1 in conference play, joining both Ft. Madison and Washington as the only three teams with one loss.
