The Trojans were hot from the get-go scoring runs in each of the first four innings on their way to a 12-4 victory in the season-opener. The doubleheader nightcap was cut short by rain with the Trojans leading 4-0 with two runners on in the top of the fourth inning.
In her first start, freshman Haley Grunwald experienced one minor hiccup in the form of a three-run fourth inning for Davis County, but was otherwise relied on a solid defensive effort behind her to tally the win. Grunwald pitched all seven innings for Fairfield giving up seven hits and striking out two.
?Being a freshman, Haley did a good job, and if you take away a couple batters that she just missed some spots on, it was a really good night,? said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. ?The defense was also solid, and they?re going to have to do that every time out.
Senior Jessi Cay led the Fairfield offense going 3-4 with two runs batted in, Katie Anderson was 2-2 while scoring three times and Rachel Schwarz and Tori Ogden each smacked a double. Allison Delker and Haley Williams also picked up hits for the 11-hit offense.
In game two, sophomore Amanda Chatfield ? also getting her first start ? threw three innings of no-hit ball that included five strikeouts before Mother Nature cut her outing short.
?It?s disappointing that we couldn?t finish the game, but it was really good to see Amanda throw well,? Bradfield said. ?Our pitchers don?t have a lot of speed, but if they can change speeds and keep hitters off-balance, they?re going to get some wins for us.?
Next up for the Trojans will be a home vs. Ottumwa Thursday night.
