FAIRFIELD — Fairfield girls soccer narrowly missed picking up its first victory of the season on Tuesday against Knoxville.
After tying through regulation, the Panthers took the victory with a game winner in overtime, 2-1.
Both squads were neck and neck throughout the majority of the contest.
The two squads traded runs throughout the first half, but by the half’s final whistle each team was still searching for its first goal of the game.
In the second, both delivered.
Fairfield’s Ivy Larsen put a nicely placed ball right passed the Knoxville keeper to give Fairfield its first score of the game.
On the other side of things, Payton Horn netted a goal for the Panthers.
For over 30 minutes of action in the second half to the final whistle each team pushed to find the game winner. With numerous chances that came up empty, the game would have to be decided in overtime.
Fairfield’s best shot at a winner came with eight minutes to go in the second half.
The Trojans got a wide-open shot at goal, but the ball was lofted over the net for a goal kick.
A minute later, Knoxville got a chance at a goal, but Janell Furguson made a tremendous diving save for the Trojans.
In the extra period, it took Knoxville just 27 seconds to win it.
The Panthers netted the winner off a nifty pass across the box.
For Fairfield, Furguson finished with five saves in the loss.
The Trojans drop to 0-5 on the season with the loss.
