MT. PLEASANT — The runs just keep coming for the No. 8 (4A) Fairfield softball team. The Trojan bats blistered the ball on Monday night in Mt. Pleasant, leading to a Southeast Conference sweep.
In Game 1, the Trojans won 11-0. In Game 2, Fairfield prevailed 14-3. In both games, the Trojans got it done in five innings.
“It doesn’t always work out positively for the team that’s favored,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “For us tonight, fortunately it did.”
Fairfield’s Emersyn Manley had a big Game 1, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Coty Engle was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a couple of runs scored.
Engle also pitched a one-hitter in the circle. The junior ace says she was thankful the offense showed out and ended the game early.
“I love when our team is altogether, just hitting a bunch and ending it quick,” Engle said. “And then I get to go chill in the outfield in the next game.”
Mt. Pleasants’ Savana Walls was 1-for-1 in Game 1. Madison Helling and Myah Starr split time in the pitcher’s circle.
Fairfield kept the bats going in Game 2. The Trojans scored eight runs in the top of the second to give starting pitcher Laney Norris plenty of breathing room.
Brynley Allison went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs in Game 2. Hannah Simpson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Jenna Norris knocked in three of her own. Laney Norris struck out two batters over a five-inning complete game victory.
Mt. Pleasant’s Jersey Beachy was 2-for-2 with a couple of RBIs. Emma Starr was 1-for-3 with a double. Ella McNamee and Helling split time in the circle.
“They’re a really good team. They’re well coached with a great pitcher,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Mike Beason. “We’ve got to fix ourselves first. We’re going through some growing pains.”
Fairfield is now 10-5 overall and 6-2 in SEC play. Mt. Pleasant is 1-13 and 0-10.
