The Trojan girls' basketball team collected a 42-27 non-conference victory over Iowa City Liberty early Saturday evening.
The story
Fairfield jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one period of play and added to their advantage with an 11-5 edge in the second quarter for a 25-11 halftime tally. The dance and drill team then had their first performance of the night before the Trojans scored 17 second half points while coasting to a 15 point victory.
Stat lines
Three players scored in double digits, but head coach Brian Witzenburg said the highlight of the night was the double-double Kara Jeffrey scored animal-style by grabbing 11 rebounds to go with her 10 points. The senior also had an assist, a block and a steal while only accumulating one foul. Post mate Malory Jones led the team in scoring with 11 points while also grabbing four rebounds. Shay Drish was the third scoring Trojan amigo to eclipse the 10 point total when she hit the mark and added six rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Junior Destiny Gridley had six points, two rebounds, three assists and four steals, while Ashley Bloomquist had three points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals and Danielle Breen was 2-2 from the charity stripe.
The Trojan ladies are also off until Thursday when they will host conference-rival Keokuk in an SEC showdown in the FHS gymnasium, the last basketball game before the holiday break that will leave us without Trojan hoops until Jan. 4 when the school travels to Fort Madison.
FHS freshman Danielle Breen floats to the hoop Saturday night against Iowa City Liberty.
