DES MOINES - The Fairfield tennis season had one more day in the sun on Tuesday when Yana Gaskell and Blake Holden took second at the state co-ed tennis tournament.
Gaskell and Holden played in five matches, going 4-1 to earn a second-place finish. The Trojans were eventually defeated by Cedar Rapids Xavier’ s Matthew Schmit and Miyako Coffey.
Before facing Xavier in the final, the Trojan pair defeated teams from Ballard, Decorah, Pella and Columbus Catholic.
Gaskell and Holden are both seniors and played No. 1 for the Fairfield girls and boys tennis teams respectively. Gaskell, a 2019 singles state champion, finished second in the state doubles tournament with teammate Nellie Higdon, and was part of a third-place effort from the Trojans at the girls team tournament.
