FAIRFIELD — Homecoming week in Fairfield got a big boost on Tuesday night, as the hometown Trojans took out Southeast Conference foe in four sets on Senior Night.
The Bloodhounds struck first, winning the opening set, but Fairfield took the final three to earn a four-set conference win; 21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20.
After storming back from a deficit in the first set, Fort Madison threatened to do it again when the Bloodhounds rallied to tie the game at 21-21 in the second. Senior Lilly Bergren served the last four points for Fairfield, including the 25th point, which was rocketed to the floor by Maddy Martin.
“We started to realize we're here to just play and have fun,” Bergren said. “The pressure of senior night, and the pressure of Homecoming week and everything went away.”
The Trojans took control after the second game. Fairfield led throughout the third set, and an ace by Bergren on the last point made it 25-15 in the set and 2-1 in the series.
A five-kill fourth set by another senior, Claire Thompson, helped the Trojans push through to the end for a 25-20 victory.
“I was feeling it a lot on senior night,” Thompson said. “The team had that steady energy throughout the sets.”
Thompson went off for 17 kills in the win. Bergren finished with 15 kills and 14 digs. Elise Setterstrom had nine kills, and Martin finished with one.
Isabel McCready led the Panthers with 26 digs. Faith Jones dished out 54 assists and collected 17 digs.
