Austin Gridley set quite a precedent for his Fairfield pitching career, but for the time being, the Trojans are happy with two wins.
In his first varsity appearance, Gridley tossed a five-inning no-hitter in a 13-2 Fairfield win to close Tuesday?s doubleheader against Central Lee. Josh Dimmitt was equally as impressive in the opener, allowing just three hits across seven innings to help the Trojans squeak out a 2-0 win.
?Definitely two needed wins,? said head coach Josh Allison after his team snapped a seven-game losing streak. ?Josh threw extremely well, and offensively, we?ve had a couple of guys? swings getting really close over the past week, and it was good to see a few of them get it going.?
The game one pitcher?s duel wasn?t settled until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Tyler Cooksey made his way to third base and took home on a balk call for the first run of the game. Kooper Dahlstrom drove in Joe Hietpas one batter later to put Fairfield up 2-0 and set up Dimmitt to close out the game in the seventh.
?We had to execute some plays to get it done, and more importantly, we worked around a couple of errors that had been turning into big innings,? Allison said.
Hietpas? single earlier in the inning was one of just two Fairfield hits on the game that were manufactured into two runs. Brent Buch doubled in the first inning.
Central Lee mustered two of its three hits with two outs in the top of the seventh before Dimmitt finished it off. The sophomore struck out six and walked two.
In the nightcap, Gridley picked up where Dimmitt left off while the Trojan bats came alive. Fairfield scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and cruised the rest of the way.
Corbin Harwood?s bases-loaded double cleared the bases and brought home three of the Trojans? five runs with two outs in the first.
Along with Harwood?s two-bagger, Hietpas, Dimmitt and Spencer Peterman all had multi-RBI games.
Gridley zoned in from the mound to strike out six while walking six.
Fairfield improves to 8-21 with the sweep and will play an SEC doubleheader at Keokuk Thursday night.
