FAIRFIELD — It is often said that a football team improves the most between its first and second games.
Fairfield High School's football team found a passing game last week but hopes its rushing game improves for tonight's home game against Clear Creek-Amana.
Likewise, Clear Creek-Amana is hoping for just such an improvement.
Fairfield's Carter Ferrel was 11 of 22 passing for 203 yards last week in a 16-9 loss at Knoxville. He had a touchdown pass to Landon Kooiker. Ferrell threw two interceptions but one was a desperation heave late in the game. The Trojans averaged 18.5 yards per completion, but just 2.1 yards per rush.
Leone Gichure carried 12 times for eight yards and Ferrel had 31 yards on six carries.
The Fairfield defense, led by Payton Cline's 8.5 tackles, held Knoxville to just 186 total yards. Ferrel had an interception. Drew Martin had 5.5 tackles, a solo sack and a block of an extra-point attempt with 2 minutes, 1 second left in the game.
CCA was ranked 10th in the Cedar Rapids Gazette/KGYM/Southeast Iowa Union poll last week before losing 42-20 to Mt. Pleasant.
Two different CCA quarterbacks (Ryan Navara, Andrew Swails) went 16 of 33 for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Tom Johnson caught five passes for 57 yards while Brock Reade and Harrison Rosenburg combined for six catches and 66 yards.
Alex Figueroa rushed 16 times for 41 yards. CCA had 67 yards on 29 attempts.
Junior T.J. Bollers and senior Zane Cunningham combined for 12.5 tackles for the CCA defense.
