FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield girls basketball team looks to keep momentum going as the end of the season draws ever closer. The Trojan’s did just that in their Monday night out of conference bout against Albia.
The Trojans held the Blue Demons to under 10 in three out of the four quarter en rout to a 56-26 victory.
“Our ball movement was good tonight,” Fairfield head coach Pat Pacha said. “When you pass the ball and it’s not all dribbling good things happen. I’m happy with how we performed tonight.”
Fairfield performed well straight off the jump and it only got better as the game went on.
Albia kept the game close through the first, trailing by just one, 5-4, midway through the quarter. Fairfield then proceeded to flip the switch. The Trojans ended the quarter with a 10-2 run to make it a 15-6 ballgame after one.
“At practice we worked on every possible thing we might see tonight,” Fairfield senior Delaney Breen said. “We came prepared. We were confident of what we could do against them, but we didn’t want to let our confidence hurt us.”
From then on out it was all Fairfield as Albia never had a solution on either side of the ball. The Trojans poured in 18 points in the second quarter while playing stifling defense, and holding Albia to just two. Fairfield led 33-10 after two quarters of play.
Fairfield’s Delaney Breen had herself a first half, dropping in four shots from deep on her way to 16 first half points.
Breen struggled to find her shot in last weeks matchup against Fort Madison. She said she been working every day since.
“Since that Fort Madison game, I’v been in the gym everyday,” Breen said. “Repetition gave me some confidence.”
The third quarter was the best offensively for Albia, but the Trojans couldn’t be thrown off beat. The Blue Demons used an 11-6 run to cut the Fairfield lead to under 20, 39-21, but Fairfield ended strong. Fairfield’s Ashlyn Lisk hit back-to-back threes and Mallory Lyon added a layup at the buzzer to extend the Trojan lead to 47-23 heading into the fourth.
“Tonight was so much fun,” Breen said. “Everybody played well. It’s so much more fun that way. Everyone was making good passes, ball fakes, getting steal and fast breaks. It’s just more fun.”
Fairfield coasted in the fourth, but still produced a 9-3 quarter to cap off the win.
Breen led the Trojans with a game-high 20 points. Danielle Breen followed with 12. Ashlyn Lisk finished with six. Brynley Allison, Savannah Hollander, Mallory Lyon and Anna Dunlap had four each. Kelsey Pacha chipped in two.
Fairfield moves to 10-6 overall and currently sits at 6-2 in Southeast Conference play.
